Welcome to Room 17

We are a group of Year 3 &4 students who are pushing the limits knowing that we can learn and do whatever we want with a growing mindset.

All our communication is via Seesaw.




Homework is given each week and the children are expected to become self motivated to complete the requirements. We will monitor who has handed their homework in; however, we will not be spending time keeping children in at lunchtime to finish it or handing out consequences. 

Book bags and reading logs need to come to school every day.

Homework books are collected in on a Friday and returned to the class on Monday.

The children will have a grid each week which shows the following areas of focus to be completed.

The research shows that children’s reading progresses considerably when they are responsible for selecting the reading material.  They need to read for AT LEAST 15 MINUTES daily, to make a difference to their reading ability.  It is great to read a variety of material and to record what they have read in their reading logs.

  • Children will be selecting their own reading material from the Library or their own personal books from home
  • It is important that children reread texts and have the opportunity to enjoy reading easier material as well. Developing reading mileage with easy texts is another important aspect in improving a child’s reading level.
  • Children need to select books they find interesting as research shows this is where children’s reading makes the biggest improvement
  • Our library will be open every lunchtime and each class will have a weekly library time, so please encourage your child to have a book they are interested in
  • To help get the book at the correct level children can use the 5 finger rule.  They read a page and every time they come to a word that is too difficult they put out a finger.  If by the end of the page they have 5 fingers out then the text is too complicated for them


The children will practise their basic facts online.  The website they will need to visit it  This works on Apple, Android and Windows devices, if you experience difficulties viewing the page correctly we recommending using Chrome as your internet browser.  You child will need to click on the maths stage suggested by their maths teacher and complete a set of basic facts by typing in the answers and clicking mark.  They then need to tick the basic facts box on their homework grid when they have completed their basic facts practice.  There is an option to make this a timed task when the children are more confident with the stage they are working on.  If you would like to practise basic facts with your child by having them say the answers orally, then they are aiming to answer your questions within 3 seconds.


Our spelling programme is called ‘Bring Spelling Alive’.  It incorporates effective strategies, a visual-based spelling programme and the phonological knowledge needed to become a confident and competent speller.  It is suitable for all spellers, from those requiring high levels of support through to those students who need to focus on vocabulary enrichment and extension.

There will be spelling homework at each level of the school and the children will be shown how to set it out and told how to do it at home.

It is very important to the programme’s success that parents are involved and we encourage you to support your child’s learning by talking about their list words and asking your child to do some of the following to assist them to learn and retain new words;

  • Look – copy – cover – write – check
  • Use coloured pens to highlight the hard bits of the word
  • Outline the shape of the word
  • Skip, stamp, or jump while you say the letters
  • Write each word 5 times in 5 different colours
  • Write or say the word in a sentence
  • See how many of the list words you can put in 1 sentence
  • Put the words in alphabetical order
  • Find rhyming words

These activities should be fun.  It is important that the children see spelling and learning new words as interesting and are enthusiastic to talk about and use new vocabulary.  This will result in improved reading and writing.

Homework procedures

  • Pre-test children on their current list e.g. Level 3 List 2
  • Transfer any errors made during the pre-test to their homework list for the week
  • Make the list up to 10 words by adding in errors from writing, and topical words from classroom programme
  • Children practise these words at home each night, Monday – Thursday, as part of their homework
  • Any words they are still finding difficult at the end of the week are transferred to the following week’s homework sheet
  • Words are NOT retested at the end of the week as they have been tested and practised as part of homework
